Creation and Acceleration

There are two kinds of product managers.

One kind unlocks new value by solving for an altogether unsolved need or by solving for a need in a new and novel way. This is the equivalent of going from Zero to One (as popularised by Peter Thiel).

The other kind accelerate value delivery by optimizing existing products. These are heavily metric driven and are great at spotting and segmenting needs and in delivering incremental value consistently.

These are complimentary in nature and every organization needs a healthy mix of both kinds.

At the individual level, we all need to operate on both sides of this coin as well.

If we aren't unlocking new opportunities for ourselves, we will eventually hit stagnation. And if we aren't accelerating the value we derive from the things we are currently doing, we are simply going through the motions and not learning anything new.
