Community Shield 2009

Yesterday marked the start of a new football season. I had gone nearly ten weeks without watching football before that. All the wait was worth it as I watched Chelsea beat Manchester United. It was only on penalties but a victory is a victory in football no matter how you get it. Before the match started, I expected Chelsea to win the game easily as they have had a very good pre-season. It was Carlo Ancelotti's first official match as the new manager of Chelsea and he showed he can acclimatise quickly to the English game and to a team like Chelsea. Ten minutes into the game and Nani scored a goal that should have been easily saved by Petr Cech. Cech made it up though after that as he made a couple of brilliant saves to deny Manchester United from going further ahead. Carlo Ancelotti gave an inspiring half time talk to the side and Chelsea came out on top in the second half. Goals from Carvalho and Lampard saw them go ahead before Rooney equalised with the last kick of the game. Chelsea were not exactly at their best but the absence of one Cristiano Ronaldo was quite evident. When it came to penalties, it was Chelsea who came out on top as they converted every kick they took and Cech denied Giggs and Evra. Ancelotti got a trophy first game into the job at Chelsea and looks good to build on it. John Terry was elated at having beaten Manchester United and the commentator rightly said "Manchester City were ready to pay him £200,000 a week but they couldn't have given him this medal today." I look forward to the game against Hull City this weekend where I expect another solid performance from the Blues.
