Effective communication

One of the most important traits of a product manager is to be user-centric. We should never jump into defining a solution before we have properly understood the problem.

Yet, when it comes to communication, we rarely follow this approach. We rarely listen with enough empathy to understand where the other person is coming from, how they view the world and what they're feeling beneath the words.

Instead, we jump straight into responding based on the assumptions we have made or on the understanding that we think we have.

Effective communicators, like good product managers, first listen with empathy and understand what their audience is saying and feeling and only then provide their own opinion or advice.
